Shakuhachi Lessons

Michael offers private lessons in his home studio, Komatsuzen Shakuhachi Studio.

Lessons are conducted in the evenings during the week and on weekends. Lessons can be scheduled by email or phone. You will learn the mechanics necessary in order to play shakuhachi (ex. correct posture, fingering position, breathing technique, and traditional kinko-ryu notation), as well as traditional music. You will also learn about the history of shakuhachi and its aesthetics, particularly from the perspective of Dokyoku.

Lessons are 60 minutes in length and cost $35.

Lectures & Demos

Lectures (high school through college) and demonstrations are offered, combined with performance and hands-on experience as an educational component, both of the shakuhachi and its music, as well as the culture that surrounds them.  Please inquire.

"To me, music is not a fixed idea.  It is not what you think it is.  You might think of a scale of seven notes, but that is not music.  Music cannot be limited to one form.  It is all around you if you listen carefully.  The sounds of water are music, or the wind in the trees, or children in the fields, or birds singing and crying- that is all music.  Even the sound of boiling can be music…  All of these are just parts of “one sound”… It is everywhere around you.  Listen for yourselves."  -Watazumido, from the film "Sukiyaki and Chips"
